Boma - Flavors of Africa (Dinner) - Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
Welcome to Boma - Flavors of Africa. One of the "All You Care to Enjoy" restaurants around Disney World. Up to our visit here we've dined at Jiko a few times and up until a week before we also dined at Sanaa, all restaurants at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. We were excited to close out our dining adventure's here. Boma is open for both Breakfast and Dinner, and it is a buffet for both.
We really looked forward to dining here finally. The unique thing about Boma is that it is African-inspired cuisine. Which they do offer a few American items here-and-there, but the flavors are defiantly from Africa and it is absolutely amazing. We've enjoyed our meals at Animal Kingdom Lodge and feel in all of Disney World they hold the title for the best food on property. Service is a whole other story. Fortunately for us Boma is good on service, but again it is a buffet.
Onto the ambiance. Before you arrive, feel free to get a look around the Savannah outside and see some live animals roaming around, then grab a drink upstairs at the Victoria Falls Lounge. So once you check in you will get seated, they do offer a few different options for drinks that are included in the price. Also a bar menu is available as well. Ready to eat now? Head up to the buffet and try as much as you want. We enjoyed everything we ate, not much we didn't care for. Our main complaint here is that depending on where you sit, it can feel cramp and packed trying to walk up and back from the buffet. Other than that we loved Boma, food was great and we will return again!
Now, who's hungry! Lets take a tour of Boma - Flavors of Africa!
Welcome to Boma - Flavors of Africa!
Pricing does change all the time. This was our current dinner pricing in early January.
The main dining section.
(From Left to Right): Regular Hummus | Red Pepper Hummus | French Rolls | Mealie Bread (Sweet Corn Muffin) | Lavosh (Thin Flatbread) | Pita Bread
We tried to not to dig into bread too much. The hummus we enjoyed, both were very good. We stuck to the Pita Bread & Lavosh.
(From Left to Right): Chrieme (Tunisian Seaffod Stew | Coconut Curry Chicken Stew | Carrot Ginger Soup
My wife loved the Chrieme & Carrot Ginger Soup. I tried the Chrieme and it was good.
(From Left to Right): Carrot Ginger Soup | Cape Malay Lamb Curry (South African-inspired Tomato-based Jalapeno-spiced Lamb Curried Stew) | Basmati Rice
The Carrot Ginger Soup is the same from the picture prior, just was in the image so I left it in this. The Lamb Curry and Rice was maybe my favorite dish of the night. Flavors were amazing. Over the past few years I've become a fan of Curry. This was by far my favorite. I went back three times for more.
(No Order): Sanibal Buttermilk Dressing (Sun-dried Tomato & Chipotle) | Edamame | Cheddar Cheese | Cucumber, Tomato & Red Onion | Apple Dressing | Mixed Salad Greens with Shredded Carrots
We opted not to try anything on this station.
(From Left to Right): Shrimp Cous Cous Salad (Top) | Chilled Chermoula Shrimp (Bottom) | Oranges, Olive & Fennel Salad (Top) | Chicken Salad with Chili Cilantro Dressing (Bottom) | Watermelon & Tomato Salad (Top) | African Fruit Fool Salad (Bottom)
I ended up trying out the Chilled Chermoula Shrimp, which for me was too much work since the shell was on, also messy with the seasoning. The flavor was a bit grainy, didn't go for more. I also tried the Shrimp Cous Cous Salad, it was okay.
Here is the Chermoula Cocktail Sauce for the shrimp.
(From Left to Right): Cous Cous with Fruit & Nuts | Peanut Rice with Coconut, Soy Sauce & Ginger | Sweet Corn & Spinach Pudding
First let's start with the Peanut Rice, wow! This was an unusual combination but worked perfectly. We both loved this, even when we were full and couldn't eat anymore, I brought a small spoonful to the table and we had to finish it. Now you want to know what is better than the rice? That would be the Sweet Corn & Spinach Pudding. This was so, so, so, so delicious! The flavor was a perfect balance of sweet and savory. Loved both so much!
(From Left to Right): Broccolini with Spiced Paprika Olive Oil | Green Plantain Chips
Everything here was great. The Broccolini we tried over at Sanaa and enjoyed it there. The Plantain Chips and Green Spread (sorry forgot the name) was great. I kept adding one of those to every plate I got. I do wish that the plantain was a little bit less crispy and had a softer inside. Would have made it perfect. Still really good.
(From Left to Right): Chakalaka (South African Spicy Tomato Stew) | Pap (Creamy White Cornmeal)
We did not try either of these items.
(From Left to Right): Fufu (Western and Central African Sweet and White Potato Mash) | Chakalaka (South African Spicy Tomato Stew)
We did not try either of these items.
(From Left to Right): Orange Almond Emulsion Crusted Salmon | Bobotie (South African Dish with Ground Beef, Lamb, Mushrooms & Egg)
I tried both of these dishes. The Salmon was good. The Bobotie was okay, I was looking forward to this dish, but it wasn't as good as I'd hope.
(From Top to Bottom): Slow Roasted Pork Ribs | Cranberry Chutney
We both tried the ribs and really enjoyed them. My wife went a couple times to get more. If she likes the ribs then you know they are good.
(From Left to Right) Sambal (Indian and Asian-style Sauce with Chipotle Peppers and Sun-dried Tomatoes) | Horseradish
We did not try either of these items.
(From Left to Right): Masai Mara (Kenyan-style Pesto with Pecan and Roasted Red Peppers | Boma Mustard
We did not try either of these items.
Tamarind Barbecue Sauce
We did not try this item.
(From Left to Right): Gravy | Mashed Potatoes | Durban-Style Roasted Chicken
We did not try the potatoes and gravy but we did try the chicken. I went with a small piece with skin on it. Flavor was pretty good.
(From Left to Right): Penne Pasta | Macaroni & Cheese | Chicken Bites
I did try the Mac & Cheese, not the best. Wouldn't get it again. The Chicken Bites I loved, they were really good! Disney does very well with their chicken bites, always some of my favorite. Perfect balance of chicken and batter.
(From Left to Right): Carrots, Peas & Corn | Marinara and Meatballs | Penne Pasta
So I did jump all over eating those veggies, yea I'm just kidding! I did however try out those meatballs in marinara sauce. They were really good. Sauce was good, which Disney does have a good red sauce. Meat was nicely seasoned and tasted just like grandma used to make.
(From Top to Bottom & Top to Bottom): Kool Slaw (Mayonnaise-based Cabbage Salad) | Pasta Salad (Tri-colored Pasta in a Curried Mayonnaise) | Watermelon Rind Salad | Avocado, Papaya and Grapefruit Salad
The only thing I tried was the Pasta Salad, I enjoyed it. I'm usually a pasta salad fan and this was no different. Just an added kick from the Curried Mayo. Really took it above the rest.
Harira (Northwest African Vegetable Lentil Soup)
We did not try this item.
(From Left to Right): Malva Pudding | Apple Cobbler
The little bites on the left were okay. The Apple Cobbler was basic, nothing different then another Cobbler.
(From Left to Right): Coffee Tart | Zebra Domes | Passion Fruit Tarts
One of Boma's most famous items is the Zebra Domes, which takes a few days to prepare. Nothing on these three items were anything special. The Domes were actually our least favorite item.
(From Left to Right): Chocolate Brownie | Chocolate Cupcake | Vanilla Cupcake | Oreo Cheesecake
I'm a brownie person and these were pretty good. Also I'm a big cheesecake person, at this point I was so full, but I had to have one of my favorite desserts. Really good.
(From Top to Bottom): Sprinkled Sugar Cookies | Chocolate Chip Cookies
We finally come to the last station of the buffet and that is the cookie station. These were both really good.
